Carnival season in Germany has started and the question is – why aren’t you heading over there? You don’t need to travel to Brazil to have the time of your life – carnival season in the Black Forest is known for being one of the most fun times of the year. It’s not the warmest time of the year, but for sure one big party time!
Black Forest people are very proud of their traditions and try to make a point that their Fasnacht (as the Swabian-Alemannic carnival is called) is very different from any other region in Germany. Fasnacht season officially starts on January 6th. On Schmutziger Donnerstag (literally ‘Dirty Thursday’ – this year on February 11th) 6 days of crazy partying start in every town. Aschermittwoch (Ash Wednesday) represents the end of carnival season.
During those 6 days kids are out of school and there is hardly a person not wearing some sort of costume. In some Black Forest towns more then 80,000 people get dressed up and cruise the streets all day and all night. Food and beer is being served 24/7 and you can attend witch burnings (Hexenverbrennung), fireworks, carnival parades and many other traditional celebrations all day and night. If you have never experienced Fasnacht in the Black Forest and are not planning on heading there this year – maybe you wanna mark your calendars for next! We offer several Fasching Tours – come join the party!
